Working In The Hay Field By JOAN ISTAS
Loren Stewart 16 works in his father Vernon's hay business in Ottawa RFD 3. He runs a small crew, hires teens like Mike Selman and Mike Waldy, handles seven cent a bale hauling, and faces hard days with trucks stuck in a dusty hot field. The job fits him though, with bales weighing 50 to 80 pounds and a steady flow of haying work as farmers bale.

Greenbug and Chinch Bug Watch in County Milo Fields
Sorghum growers are advised to inspect fields as greenbugs increase and may damage small milo. Chinch bugs linger in some fields. heavy dry weather could raise nymphs. Ground insecticides for green bugs include Malathion, Cygon, and Disyston. chinch bug control lists Levin and Furadan. Dustbags and backrubbers remain popular for fly control in cattle, with new feed through options and ear tag methods in experimental stages. Extension entomologist Leroy Brooks notes horn flies as a major concern and stresses sanitation and timely pesticide use. For tomatoes, mulch to conserve moisture, use low nitrogen fertilizers, water deeply and infrequently, and harvest ripe fruit to prevent cracking. Continuous vigilance and early treatment are urged by Extension agents.
