Believe US Could Reach Mars In'75

Industrial space technologist Andrew Kalitinsky of General Dynamics, San Diego, presented a government study on NOVA launch vehicles proposing a Mars expedition by 1975. The concept envisions a convoy of four multiton spaceships lifted by rockets up to 380 feet tall weighing nearly 40 million pounds with payload capacity exceeding a million pounds per lift.

NOVA concept eyed as practical Mars mission hardware

Nova has long been a concept in space engineering. Seen as a potential manned mission system, it would require a rocket rivaling or surpassing Saturn V. Kallinsky reported at a Mars exploration symposium that his firm and the Martin-Marietta Corp of Baltimore have developed promising design configurations for practical hardware in a relatively short time if needed.
