Care for tires vital during summer travel
Firestone notes air pressure is free but often ignored. A Cleveland TV survey found only one of 32 tires at proper pressure. Overinflation and underinflation harm tire wear and fuel use. On long trips, raise pressure four pounds above the car’s cold level, not exceeding tire sidewall limit. Check inflation before trips and after miles driven. Also check wheel balance, alignment, and spare air.

Electronic Ignitions in Cars Require Annual Service
Electronic ignition systems cut points and use magnetic components to provide secondary voltage. Despite advances, coil, distributor cap, rotor, wiring, and timing must be checked regularly. Contaminants foul spark plugs and misfires can occur, so Champion recommends annual ignition system service for all systems.

Safety at stake as maintenance lags in MEMA study
MEMA reports that over 40 percent of maintenance tasks in original owner cars averaging 3.86 years remain undone. Five-year and older cars also show substantial neglect with 23 percent and 11 percent outstanding maintenance respectively. Brakes and shocks are particularly neglected with 54 percent never having brake replacement and 57.7 percent retaining original shocks after four years.
