The group runs a food pantry and social agency of last resort and seeks more volunteers to explain its mission. Penny lunches resume at Melvern United Methodist Church with noon start and sandwiches pies and ice cream. second Saturday monthly through November. Ottawa council unwraps budget with no water rate rise
Ottawa city commissioners started budget season by reviewing the water fund which is projected to begin 2003 with about 1.7 million in reserve and receipts near 2.0 million. The panel also discussed issuing 1.2 million in temporary notes for rip rap on the Marais des Cygnes River dike and approved or reviewed zoning, permits, proclamations, and plans for nuisance enforcement, with a focus on curb cuts, Willow Lane, and potential full time code enforcement. A Friday visit from a League of Kansas Municipalities group and city cable franchise negotiations were noted. Executive session followed regarding a lawsuit filed by a former employee.

City backs using Crestview nursing home for records storage
City officials signaled support Monday for Franklin County Commission plans to convert the old Crestview nursing home into a records center. Commissioner Ramsey and City Manager Padgett noted county interest in shared space as the county seeks central storage due to space limits and state retention requirements. The county has withdrawn the building from sale after failed bids and will study security and fire safety as part of the conversion.
