Field Day Provides Insights On Small Grains At Ottawa Station
About a dozen farmers joined a Small Grain Field Day at Ottawa Experiment Station to learn wheat, barley, and oats varieties. Kilgore of Kansas State University Extension notes oats planted early show promise, with Lang and Bates resisting red leaf oat and barley yellow dwarf, while Newton Bona and Hart lead hard red winter and soft wheats respectively. Research on nitrogen rates, semi dwarf seed quality, and new varieties KS 79H69 KS 79H70 and KS 75210 is under way ahead of August cereal conference decisions.

Early Weaning in Drought Considered by Kansas State
Kansas State University extension experts urge drought era early weaning may fit some operations. Early weaning boosts rebreeding rates in thin cows, improves conception, shortens days to heat, and raises calf gains while reducing pasture needs. Oklahoma data show higher rebred rates with early weaned calves and rapid adaptation to limited nursing strategies.
