Energy Car Pushes For Transportation Pooling
U S energy chief Charles W Duncan Jr urges employers and local governments to boost ride sharing and mass transit to curb oil imports and inflation. He cites 52 million solo drivers with 156 million empty seats and notes Missouri Kansas City Hallmark Cards as a leading program. Workshops in 10 cities aim to enroll 20 percent of workers in car and van pools and improve fleet gas mileage. Duncan highlights a drop in gasoline use in early 1980 but says Americans lack willingness for Carter’s proposed 10 cent per gallon tax.
