No Frills For The Farmer
Kansas State University economists Mildred Walker and Joe Kropf find marketing costs exceed production costs in most foods. The farmer’s share of the consumer food dollar averaged 42 cents last year, down from 46 cents in 1973, with variation by product from 23 to 62 cents. They note convenience practices raise marketing costs but can benefit farmers, while overall the 1970s saw a widening farm to retail price spread. Looking to 1980, costs are expected to outpace farm prices, widening the spread and reducing the farmer’s share.

Light touch seals big golf club deal in smoking policy
Oscar Austad built a multimillion dollar golf club business with a strict no smoking rule. The 75 employee warehouse in a smoke-free 10 acre yard ships 500,000 catalogs yearly, rejects smokers, and offers a $100 bonus to quit. He once pushed anti smoking laws and politics, while admitting he is a poor golfer who prefers tennis.
