About 50 residents attended the Franklin County Commission meeting as the Ottawa/Franklin County Economic Development Corp. Recreation Task Force outlined an $8.5 million plan for an indoor pool fitness center ballfields and a water park at an 80 acre site to replace the county fairgrounds and urged a quarter cent sales tax increase. Critics questioned the lack of a chosen location and feasibility while supporters noted city water and utility subsidies and potential sites to consider before the November election.
At 14 Ottawa cartoonist Matt Morton drew for Sports Illustrated for Kids. His renderings of Michael Jordan and Brett Favre appeared in the February 2000 issue alongside a profile. Morton, a Wren Middle School student, aims to be a professional artist, drawing people and sports stars.
Franklin County Commission decided not to close the 85 year old Blackstone Bridge and will conduct repairs. After a public hearing attended by 12 residents, a petition with signatures opposed closing was presented. Engineers estimated a $250,000 redesign cost with 80 percent potential funding, but funding would take years.
Adeline Wood, 82, keeps teaching at Atchison County Community High School in Effingham, where she has worked for 40 years. Her career began in a one room Sabetha area school after leaving New York for Ottawa University, and now she teaches English and French while guiding generations as a beloved mentor.
