Midday Market Report Shows Small Dow Gain
The Dow Jones average rose 6.82 to 2298.39 by noon as stocks edged higher. Gainers led losers about 7 to 6 with 732 up, 624 down, and 436 unchanged on the NYSE, while Accel jumped 11 to 43 on news of a Computer Associates deal. Hospital Corp of America gained 1% to 47 as it approved selling over 100 general hospitals to an employee group. The NYSE composite rose .36 to 163.84, AMEX index fell .40 to 325.99, and total volume reached 69.70 million.

Fires Ravage Lavish Pebble Beach Homes
A wind driven blaze in Pebble Beach destroyed 36 luxury homes and burned 100 acres, forcing 200 residents to flee. Containment reached 80 percent by morning with full containment expected later, as brush fires in Southern California were also battled. Fire officials valued the losses at up to $500,000 per home, while residents reported many homes in the $400,000 to $600,000 range. Three firefighters were lightly hurt. The Morse Botanical Reserve site is under investigation and the fire began from the reserve's inaccessible area.
