Playoff Needed In PGA National

Jerry Barber and Dean January battled to a 277 tie after 72 holes at Olympia Fields, forcing an 18-hole playoff for the PGA Championship. Barber, 45, endured two late bogeys to surge back, while January, 31, led most of the day before Barber’s clutch birdie on the 16th tied the score.

Murphy Nips All Nine In Three Frames

Nine men faced Harry Murphy and all nine struck out in the first three innings of the Athletics Dodgers Little League contest at Forest Park. The Athletics won 16 to 2. In the other game the White Sox defeated the Cardinals 7 to 1 in five innings.

Phillips Softball Ties and Beats Stars in Practice Tilt

Phillips 66 softball edged the Church League Stars 3 to 2 at Forest Park in a tuneup for the Regional Softball tournament in Lawrence starting Friday. Larry Webker allowed five hits and fanned two for the victory as Phillips scored in each inning, aided by Ted Queen’s scoring on a passed ball. The All-Stars later defeated the Cardinals 4 to 2, with Eugene Wingert earning the win. Phillips and the All-Stars both set to open regional play Friday, Phillips vs Cliff's Service of Emporia and the All-Stars vs Fort Leavenworth.
