Joyce Martin with Friends of the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail announced a six point two mile Volkswalking route through Garnett. The check in point is Toto's Sandwich and Gift Shop, with walkers free to start from dawn to dusk year round.
Trail crews push Phase I of the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail with culverts and farm crossings. Heavy rains caused minor damage to crossings near Welda while drainage work continues near Scipio Road. Volunteers are invited to install bicycle racks and benches, call Ken Weide at 448-5560. No Phase II completion date yet. a KDWP walk through may occur in two weeks to check specs.
The Garnett railroad memorabilia exhibit featuring antique toy trains and train wreck videos will run from 6 to 9 p.m. on August 12 at the Santa Fe Depot. A potluck dinner is open to the public in the depot’s south bag gage area, with attendees asked to bring a salad or dessert. A Friends of the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail meeting will follow at 7 p.m.
