New Reliever Saberhagen Helps Royals Top Tigers 5-4
Kansas City ace Bret Saberhagen earned relief duties in his first since 1984 as the Royals edged Detroit 5-4. Saberhagen retired six straight batters after coming on in the eighth, improving to 6-10, while Steve Balboni drove in the decisive run in the ninth. Detroit pitcher sparky Anderson lamented the lack of offense despite a strong pitching staff and a 9-3 since the All Star break, as Tom Brookens and Kirk Gibson produced early runs only to see Kansas City rally with George Brett and Balboni keying the late surge.
