Nathaniel J. Yorkie Smith faces three first degree murder charges in Iola. Judge John W. White denied a mistrial after late disclosures, chastising state conduct but ruling the materials did not prejudice the defense. Testimony resumes today as prosecution materials are now provided.
The funeral for George W Tilcock age 34 of Topeka will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Dengel & Son Mortuary with burial in Dean Cemetery Appanoose. He died Wednesday in a Topeka hospital after a life in care at a sheltered home and church ties with Centropolis. Rev Willard Neuman will officiate.
A mother Gail Barton 23 and her daughter Amy 3 were listed in fair condition at University of Kansas Medical Center after a one car wreck on Wilson Street near here. Barton, from Pomona, was treated for a broken left forearm and Amy for head injuries after the 1981 Plymouth left the road and hit a culvert. Aaron 2 was uninjured.
A fire of undetermined origin destroyed the home of David and Sherri Vestal two miles northeast of Williamsburg on Wednesday about 2 p.m. A passerby first spotted it. the couple was away and learned of the blaze later. Firefighters kept the fire from spreading. some damaged items were recovered. No arson. cause under investigation with possible electrical fault.
