Rural Aid Pass Ends Rural Development Gridlock
Congress nears final passage of a rural renewal bill to inject about $500 million annually into rural development. The House approved a 52-point compromise after clashes over coordination by the Agriculture secretary and a broader revenue-sharing plan, sending the measure to the Senate. The plan would fund grants for pollution abatement, industrial centers, and job creation, with Farmers Home Administration loans for small business and industry. President Nixon had proposed a $1.3 billion rural credit system linked to revenue sharing.
