Beef Processors Struggle With Backlog Amid Price Ceilings
Kansas and Missouri locker plants report a meat crunch as buyers race to secure beef before federal price ceilings extend into September. Firms like Waterville's Alvin Roepke and Washington Mo's Norvin Kampschroeder face weeks long waits, while Safeway and other chains halt beef sales. Industry leaders warn ceilings depress farmer incentives and risk future shortages.

Changes Urged In Campaign Financing
A Kansas interim elections committee heard proposals to fund campaigns by tax revenue rather than private contributions. Testimony from publicist Don Richards and officials like Secretary of State Elwin Shanahan urged stricter disclosure, lower limits, and possibly public financing to curb spending and influence.
