Padgett proposes raising city sales tax by a half cent to avoid sharp property tax hikes and fund deferred items like playgrounds and street work. Five mills would net about 350000, while a half cent sales tax could bring 1.1 million, as state cuts and rising costs squeeze Ottawa’s budget. Local officials consider staging a sales tax vote while balancing utility revenues and franchise tax declines.
