Broken drill bit slows rescue of nine miners in Quecreek shaft
Miners aged 30 to 55, trapped 240 feet underground after flood waters rushed into an adjacent mine, faced hypothermia risk as rescuers labored to drill a 2 1/2 foot wide shaft and retrieve them. A broken drill bit halted progress and a second rig was prepared. Authorities warned progress time and uncertainty remained high.
