Mars Permafrost Hides Substantial Surface Water
NASA imagery indicates near surface water stored as Martian permafrost. Mars Global Surveyor data show smooth hills of ice frozen dust with ice vanished zones, suggesting an ice age about 100000 years ago. Scientists note a potential reservoir for water, possibly up to 15000 cubic miles, enough to cover Mars 16 inches deep.
