Cottonwood breakthroughs boost South planting stock
The U S Forest Service reports 615000 cuttings of superior cottonwood trees shipped to state and private nurseries in the lower Mississippi Valley. Chief John R McGuire says the trees, developed over 15 years, can grow up to 12 feet annually, about 20 percent faster than ordinary cottonwoods. The “foundation stock” should yield millions of new trees within three years, with nurseries in Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee and Kentucky growing the stock. Landowners can access many of the trees in the 1972-78 planting season.
