New Standard Code Aims To Unite Data Processing
A $3 million effort sponsored by 29 industry groups and the American Standards Association has produced a new alphabetical numerical language for computers and data processing machines. The code allows 128 characters on seven rows of paper tape and supports 32 symbols in five rows for varied applications. Widely adopted by spring, it promises automatic interchanges among machines from multiple vendors, reducing translation needs and potentially saving governments and businesses many times the initial cost. IBM says the code lays a foundation for standardizing formats across media and data transmissions, as translation currently requires costly methods or extra hardware.
