Battle-wattered Constitution to sail after 116 years
ABBLEHEAD Mass AP The USS Constitution, oldest commissioned warship afloat, to sail from Marblehead Harbor back to Boston under its own power on the 200th anniversary of its launch. About 25 000 spectators witnessed the voyage with a 21 gun salute and a parade of historic and modern vessels. Edna Strom of Quincy expressed pride in America. The ship, nicknamed Old Ironsides, was undefeated in 30 engagements and famously defeated the Guerriere in 1812. Its Marblehead visit in 1814 involved shelter from two British frigates, aided by a Marblehead crew share.
