Benefit In Tariff Treaty For Kansas Farmer
Kansas farmers may gain from the Kennedy Round tariff talks with a new three year grains agreement. It sets a minimum base price of 1.73 per bushel for No 2 Hard Winter wheat at Gulf ports, about 23 cents above the prior International Wheat Agreement. The farm price averages about 1.38 per bushel, 13 cents above the loan rate, with export subsidies likely to be cut, benefiting taxpayers and potentially producers through higher world prices and longer term trade growth. Nearly 60 percent of U S wheat goes to export markets as Geneva tariff cuts promise further reductions in industrial tariffs.
