At the Franklin County Fair on Thursday afternoon, young exhibitors faced the bucket calf show arena. Rylee Radcliffe, 11, Pomona, placed first overall in the intermediate division as Hunter McCurdy, Williamsburg, watched and judges moved among the calves. Mark Wray and Brandy Shoemaker assisted Radcliffe in the event.
Herald staff writer notes Courtney or family involvement in readying a cow for the upcoming county fair. Activity centers on grooming, training, and presentation to judges. Community readers are invited to attend and support local exhibitors.
Cade Island, 9, entered woodworking at the 4-H event, crafting a salt box he hopes cows will lick for minerals. He earned a blue ribbon along with awards in forestry, foods and nutrition, and electricity. Gary Ross supervised the woodworking category noting judges assess workmanship, presentation and adherence to directions, plus cost.
Ross notes this year includes a standout veg and fish cleaning table among many entries. He says most projects need parental help and emphasizes the event remains a family affair with participants doing the work while parents assist. Island's dad contributed modestly, and a blueprint came from a book.
