Farm Bill Hearing Set on Ag Dept Reprisals
Washington AP The Senate investigations subcommittee will hold hearings on allegations that Agriculture Department officials threatened reprisals against agricultural groups opposing the Kennedy farm bill. The date of the closed hearings was to be announced. Senator John L. McClellan said a full public inquiry is not warranted now but some witnesses with affidavits may be questioned under oath. The inquiry follows complaints by John A. Todd of Memphis chief of the National Cotton Compress and Warehouse Association. Todd said he heard of possible reprisals if the association opposed the farm program. The Justice Department is also reviewing Todd's claims that cotton storage groups could lose anticipated payments if they opposed the bill.
