Garnett approves 48 percent sewer rate increase

Garnett City Commission voted Tuesday night to raise sewer charges by 48 percent based on average water use from January through March. A sample 3,000 gallon month would rise from 7.45 to 11.15 dollars. The panel also discussed an Internet page proposal and a flagpole upgrade plan, plus a cost study on grain prices at local markets.

Physicians seek repairs for county parking and drainage

Commissioners agreed both parking lot issues must be resolved but work likely won’t start until fall. Two handicapped spaces exist near the annex with plans to add six more. A drain will divert standing water. All three commissioners and County Engineer Ron Miller attended a KAC seminar in Salina. The Franklin County meeting organized by KAC is set for Tuesday in Wichita at the 4-H building at 1 p.m.

Second Frontier Celebration and Rendezvous at Pomona Park

Trappers and traders will be featured as Kansas frontier history is celebrated at Pomona State Park with live 1800s reenactors, camps, and entertainers. The event highlights fur trade, mountain men, Santa Fe Trail traders, and early settlers with frontier life demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

Richmond Area Civic Organization Hosts Franklin County Fair

The Cunningham duo receive lifetime contributions honors as the parade theme Once upon a Time guides floats judged in multiple categories. Judging continues Monday and Tuesday with livestock home economics and athletic events. Prizes for top places and a two night carnival round out the program with live entertainment nightly Saturday through Tuesday.

Local benefit for cancer patient Couts with community support

Friends rally around David Couts, diagnosed with advanced leukemia, as doctors fight to treat him. An Ottawa hospital stay continues with bone marrow testing planned for a possible transplant.
