U S Air Raids Peak In Hanoi Haiphong Area War
American fighter bombers punched North Vietnam in the Hanoi Haiphong region with the heaviest raids in over a week. The U S command logged more than 340 strikes, claiming fuel depots and port facilities hit near Haiphong within a mile of the city. North Vietnam claimed many dead and extensive damage. The Navy reported destroyers sank one barge and damaged two others near Dong Hoi. In Quang Tri Province South Vietnamese forces faced stubborn resistance with 116 North Vietnamese killed and 20 tanks destroyed, while South Vietnamese losses reached 24 dead and 45 wounded.
