Kennedy era farm bill gets partial Senate approval
The Senate Agriculture Committee reached agreement on an omnibus farm bill that drops the proposal allowing farmer groups to craft their own programs subject to congressional veto. The bill preserves broad congressional control while granting the agriculture secretary limited power to extend marketing orders for selected crops. Chairman Ellender favored quick committee action toward floor consideration. The measure also limits Food for Peace extension to three years beyond its current end.
