Moroccan rebels fail coup as king vows vengeance
In Rabat at dawn, leaders of the attempt to overthrow King Hassan II were executed. Three generals and other officers were shot after detailing the plot. The king said the Libyan style coup was inspired by Libya's 1969 uprising and warned more executions could follow. Algerian and Tunisian officials stood with Hassan as the rebel assault on the Skhirat palace during the king’s 42nd birthday party was crushed, with heavy casualties among rebels and guests.
