Garden pests and planting trees in Franklin County fields
Garden webworms infest alfalfa soybeans and milo with a slender greenish black caterpillar about an inch long. Early alfalfa cutting helps. Field scouting should confirm worm presence. yellow to cream moths signal potential outbreaks. Control relies on crop type with insecticides such as Levin parathion Lorsban. Small grasshoppers are thick along fences and pond dams. early application of Sevin malathion Dursban Lorsban or Diazinon is advised in non crop areas. Walnut caterpillars are abundant on walnut and pecan trees. control includes malathion diazinon Sevin or methoxychlor. Seedling trees for windbreaks and conservation plantings offered by Franklin County Extension Office. 30 trees cost 33 dollars in Austrian Scotch Ponderosa and red cedar varieties, shipping in late September.
