Birth Trauma Link To Later Addiction And Self Harm
SAN FRANCISCO AP Swedish study links maternal use of barbiturates or opiates during labor to higher odds of offspring becoming drug addicts or engaging in self destructive acts later in life. Mechanical birth trauma and asphyxia during birth correlate with violent and self harming deaths among adolescents and young adults. Researchers analyzed 99 addicts and 412 suicide or substance death cases against controls from Stockholm hospitals. Dr. Davenport cautioned about obstetric drug use while noting imprinting as a possible mechanism.
