Montana coal tax ruling could affect Kansas policy debate
The Supreme Court's 6-3 ruling upholding Montana's 30 percent coal severance tax is unlikely to have immediate Kansas effects but may influence future utility costs and bolster severance tax advocates. Kansas officials and industry leaders weigh possible links to Kansas oil and gas levies, imports, and price shifts, with debate over 5 percent oil and gas and 2 percent coal taxes and how much of any tax would be passed to consumers.
