ValuJet to buy AirTran and drop name in merger
ValuJet Airlines agrees to acquire AirTran Airways via a 61.8 million stock swap, forming AirTran Holdings Inc. and dropping the ValuJet name. The combined carrier would operate 40 aircraft across 46 cities with 2,742 employees and 238 peak daily departures, HQ location under review with Orlando a leading candidate. The deal aims for completion in about four months amid ongoing losses since the 1996 Flight 592 crash and an FAA grounding. Analyst Steven Lewins calls the merger risky due to continued losses for both firms.
