Williamsburg Elementary will replace its playground surface with a rubber surface funded by a 4,256 grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Principal Susan Wildeman says pea gravel migrates and rubber is safer. The school aims to install the new surface and equipment this fall as fundraising continues, with plans to donate old equipment to the city.

Leavenworth police warn of illegal tattoo artists who allegedly tattooed at least four underage customers without parental consent. One patient tested positive for hepatitis C, another test was negative. Authorities urge tips from anyone who received tattoos from unlicensed operators. State law requires licensed parlors by the Kansas Board of Cosmetology and the city. It is illegal to tattoo someone under 18 without parental consent.
Anti abortion activist Randall Terry pressed Senator Sam Brownback to lead a filibuster against Sonia Sotomayor's Supreme Court nomination. Brownback said he will vote against confirmation, and aides said no filibuster plan has been disclosed. Terry, on a 15 city media tour, visited Topeka and Kansas City and Wichita.
