Critics Offer Alternative to Campaign Finance Bill
Washington Critics push an alternative that would let unions corporations and individuals donate to political parties. Shays Meehan say this strategy aims to derail the Senate backed measure which would ban soft money and certain election ads. Ney backs a softer approach while Bush opposes a veto, Armey condemns campaign letters as overreaching.

West Virginia floods claim one life in Mullens disaster
In Mullens and across southern and central West Virginia, residents cling to rooftops as floods from May rain inundate communities still reeling from earlier downpours. An elderly woman was found dead in Wyoming County near the Guyandotte River as Gov. Wise declared a state of emergency in eight counties and federal aid eligibility expanded. Flooding disrupted rail service, stranding Amtrak travelers in Charleston while Amtrak and local crews coordinated rescues and diversions. A thunderstorm earlier dumped nearly 8 inches of rain in Mullens as officials warned the damages would be extensive.
