The Dow Jones average fell to 1818.62 as trading remained tight on Wall Street. Safeway Stores jumped 41 percent to 575 while Dart Group offered 58 a share, Bernard Chaus opened at 17, Sears Roebuck fell 34 to 44 and planned a public offering. The NYSE composite rose to 138.97 and volume reached 67.59 million by noon.
The FDA announces a ban on six sulfite preservatives used on fresh fruits and vegetables in restaurant salad bars, citing at least 13 deaths and risks to about 500,000 sensitive individuals including asthmatics. The rule, effective in 30 days, adds a new disclosure requirement for some packaged foods and covers other non packaged foods in later regulations.
Objections from taxpayers to the 1987 budget and tax levy will be discussed at a hearing on July 9 1986 at 8 00 AM in Garnett Kansas. The notice lists the proposed expenditures and the estimated tax rate for comparison with a maximum budget limit. Also includes corrections and miscellaneous community notices.
