The Labor Department shows seasonally adjusted new unemployment claims falling by 39,000 to 310,000 for the week ending July 3, the best since October 2000. Economists had expected around 345,000, though auto plant retooling seasonality may skew the figures. The four week moving average dropped to 336,000, the lowest since May 22.
Former Enron founder Kenneth Lay turned himself in to the FBI amid criminal charges following a nearly three-year federal probe into the company. He was photographed in handcuffs, accompanied by his wife, and escorted to Houston's federal courthouse as indictments against Lay and associates were unveiled.
Local photographer Vickey Thompson, manager of the PCA International portrait studio at the Wal-Mart SuperCenter in Ottawa, was named runner-up in a quarterly contest among 2,500 locations worldwide. Franklin County commissioners eyed up to $10,000 in unspent funds as possible savings. Information Technology Director Jason Parks said departmental line items may hold underutilized money, suggesting phone costs could drop from $32,500 and computer and software costs from $40,350 per department. He noted current budgets for these items exceed actual needs, with some departments including cell phone costs in phone lines.
