Reapportionment case could cost Kansas $25,000 in fees

Topeka attorney Eugene Hiatt billed $10,300 for GOP clients in the three judge reapportionment ruling while Lawrence attorney Arnold Berman plans a similar claim for Democrats. The attorney general’s office already paid Jerry Levy $4,398 for representing Gov. Carlin and objects to fee awards for Hiatt and Berman, arguing no party won by court adoption of a plan. Hiatt says his clients prevailed by securing new district boundaries. Berman will argue the court’s plan matched one offered by Senate Leader Steineger, implying Democratic victory and eligibility for fees.
