Quail Raising at Lansing Prison Yields Cash and Wildlife

Kansas State Penitentiary inmates run a hatchery at Lansing, raising over 10,000 quail this year for about 25 cents each. Under supervisor Gerald Boling, two breeding methods, including colony breeding, boost fertility to about 95 percent. Birds are hatched in incubators, fed with yellow-dyed feed, then released to farmers across Eastern Kansas. The program uses prison labor to cut costs, promotes wildlife management, and supports quail hunting on farm property.
