Crop Planting Survey May Show Control Needs

Washington reports indicate government crop planting and production surveys this week may decide tighter controls for 1958 crops. The Agriculture Department will release a cotton acreage report today and a broader crop survey Wednesday with forecasts for several crops. If total production nears last year’s record, Benson may push measures to reduce plantings next year despite disliking controls, and the soil bank program’s future could be shaped. The soil bank pays farmers to idle land, totaling about 900 million dollars this year, and Benson noted steps may be taken to prevent land taken out of production from shifting to other crops, which has reduced some outputs without lowering overall volume.
