Firework- sparked pasture blaze ranks among harsh Franklin County fires

Fire crews battled a pasture fire near I-35 that destroyed more than 40 acres, hay worth about 4,000 dollars, and damaged crops. Officials say fireworks caused about 15 fires in the county this year, with many others possibly linked to fireworks. Dangers linger as smoldering cedar trees spark spot fires days later.

Firefighting On 100-Degree Day Battles 40 Acres Of Grass Fire

In Ottawa area, a Tuesday grass fire started near Nebraska Road and K-68 after fireworks were set off in dry pasture. Five fire departments and 24 firefighters fought the blaze for about three hours, aided by winds up to 20 mph, scorching 40 acres and threatening a fireworks stand and two animal care facilities. One firefighter was hospitalized for dehydration and others treated for exhaustion.

Smoldering Hay Fire Sparks Major Local Damage

Franklin County officials report over 4000 dollars in hay destroyed and unknown losses to soy and wheat crops, two power lines, and several fence rows along I-35. Ottawa Fire Department chief Jeff Carner calls it one of the largest grass fires in the area in his 29 years on the job.
