Platform Battle Seen In GOP Platform War
SAN FRANCISCO AP The 1964 Republican platform writers begin work amid a clash between Goldwater and Scranton supporters over civil rights. Melvin Laird lists platform wording on the civil rights law as a main conflict. Sen. Hugh Scott hopes to push moderate pro progressive planks, while Goldwater backers view this as an attempt to erode support for the Arizona senator. Scott aims to declare the measure constitutional, in contrast to Goldwater who voted against it for constitutional concerns.

CORE to Pressure Rights Opponents at GOP Convention
The Congress of Racial Equality says it will press candidates supportive of civil rights and maintain non endorsement. National director Janes Farmer outlined protests at the Republican convention and ongoing political education campaigns while CORE stays nonpartisan. A Missouri beating case involving George Spann and tensions over Barry Goldwater's candidacy preceded lighter remarks from Dick Gregory and Louis Lomax. Spann, missing, later appeared badly beaten at home in Brooksville, while his arrest report in Columbus could not be verified by authorities. Apparently Spann planned to return to St. Louis. Gregory noted his frequent jailing and declared support for President Johnson. The convention authorized actions to suspend or expel chapters not aligning with CORE aims.
