Rain Delays Proves a Thriller in McLain NL Debut
Denny McLain made his National League debut for Atlanta as a rainout saved him from a tense eighth inning after Jose Cardenal and Don Kessinger led off with singles. The Cubs tied the game 3-3 before a downpour halted play and prompted an unresolved protest from Leo Durocher. The Braves won the first game 5-1 with a seventh inning burst powered by Paul Casanova and Mike Lum. Seaver carried a no hitter into the ninth for the Mets in their split with San Diego while Houston shut out Pittsburgh.

AL Pitchers Allow No Fireworks By Herschel Nissen
Three comeback pitchers two rookies and one 20 game winner kept the July 4 fireworks to a minimum in the American league Tuesday. Pat Dobson led the Orioles to first in AL East with an 11 strikeout 2-1 win over the White Sox. Roger Nelson blanked the Tigers for his first complete game since 1969. Lynn McGlothen earned his first major league win with a three hitter as Boston beat Minnesota 2-0. Blue Moon Odom notched his sixth victory as Oakland topped the Yankees 4-2. Jim Lonborg won his fourth straight for Milwaukee in a 4-2 win over California. Dick Tidrow pitched 2-0 shutout over Texas with Cleveland. In NL action Cincinnati beat St Louis 6-1, Houston 6-0 over Pittsburgh, Mets 2-0 over San Diego, Montreal 7-3 over LA, San Francisco 2-1 over Philadelphia, and Atlanta 5-1 over Chicago before rain halted the nightcap. Burrs of fireworks centered on Oakland where Sal Bando hit a grand slam off Mel Stottlemyre.
