Socialists' Split Threatens Italian Government Crisis
Rome AP reports Italy faces a major political crisis as a split within the Socialist party erupts. Foreign Minister Nenni resigns as party president while four other Socialist ministers quit, threatening Premier Rumor's center-left coalition formed with Nenni's Socialists. If Rumor falls, elections likely. Communists may gain influence but not regain government power. The rift follows a two month power struggle with Deputy Premier De Martino, who backs closer ties to the Communists. Nenni, long allied with the Communists, shifted after the 1956 Hungarian uprising and returned the Stalin peace prize money to the Red Cross.
