Alaska wildfire drives hundreds from homes as planes grounded
Dense smoke from a wildfire 30 miles northeast of Fairbanks grounded firefighting aircraft. The blaze grew to about 215000 acres as wind and heat worsened conditions, prompting evacuations of subdivisions and cabins. Fairbanks sheltered evacuees as Red Cross set up relief and animals were relocated to fairs and mushers’ properties.
