Olathe faces up to 30 million for highway projects
Kansas officials say Olathe must cover about 30 million dollars for three state highway upgrades. The city’s shares are about 24 million for the 151st Street interchange, 4.4 million for the Santa Fe interchange, and 1.5 million for the Kansas 150 corridor. State and federal funding total roughly 61 million. The city had budgeted 9 million in 1990 for capital projects, and Mayor Jim Green cautions on funding sources as tax increases loom.

Senate Debates 17.6 Billion Housing Bill Amid Veto Risk
The Senate opened debate on a 17.6 billion housing bill as the White House warned a veto is possible without agreement on three points. The measure includes options for prepaying federally subsidized mortgages, preserving low income housing, or transferring properties, with HUD incentives and a new Housing Opportunities Partnerships program. A House banking committee plan and CBO estimates shape the debate, with focusing issues on prepayment and program funding.

Ottawa artist's lifetime work on display at library
Diane Yeamans reports on Cena Geneva Benjamin, Ottawa RFD 2, a painter and commercial artist whose show at the Ottawa Library surveys much of her life’s art. The exhibit includes a self portrait in pastels, later oil works, and commercial art for Western Auto, PBYs and B-24s manuals, with signatures under Bible or Benjamin. Benjamin recalls an early love of drawing, a Vanderslice Scholarship to the Kansas City Art Institute, and work for Convair and Consolidated Vultee during the 1940s. She later lived on a farm near Garnett, studied at Kansas State University, and worked in Ottawa for Athletic Supplies and National Sign Company.
