Kathy Jo Thompson Tops Nation as Junior Rider

Kathy Jo Thompson of Owensboro Kentucky is named the top junior rider in the country after winning the 1981 Good Hands Medal at the National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden New York City. The honor, awarded each November, recognizes the best under 18 rider based on performance and presentation. Kathy Jo described the scoring emphasis on showing the horse while maintaining a poised, tall posture with steady hands and heels down. It took nine years of showing and improving to achieve the medal, and she plans to study art or journalism at Notre Dame University while continuing riding as a hobby.
