Holiday Adds To Gas Woe

The July Fourth holiday and poor weather strained gasoline supplies as travel increased. Stations were sparse nationwide, with 75 percent open on Sunday along Interstate 80 in Nebraska and about half in the state pumping gas. In the Dakotas open stations ranged 40 to 60 percent, while California had few open stations with no lines. Miami residents called for relief, and Jaycees collected responses blaming government and oil companies, with suggestions like four day weeks and more transit investment. Tourism on East Coast beaches suffered as weather worsened and fuel shortages hit profits.
