Renegotiation Board Faces Renewal Battle in Senate
The Renegotiation Board, active since 1951 and credited with $952 million recovered in excess profits plus $1.3 billion voluntarily returned by contractors, expired its authorization as of Sunday. The Senate Finance Committee has tabled a renewal bill, while the House previously approved a three year renewal. If not renewed, profits after June 30 would not be renegotiable. Chairman Lawrence E. Hartwig said there is a two year work backlog and funds extend into next summer. Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez advocates renewal, arguing the board returns $18 for every dollar spent. The board’s jurisdiction covers defense and space contractors with negotiable sales over $1 million to multiple federal agencies.
