CHICAGO AP The cost of collecting federal taxes is 45 cents per $100 of revenue. IRS notes that in 1962 taxpayers contributed a record $99.4 billion. This 45 cent rate compares with 32 cents per $100 in 1944 and the 1871 peak of $5.30. When the income tax began in 1913, the IRS spent $1.59 per $100 collected.
