Christo Proposes The Gates In Central Park Amid Debate
New York artist Christo envisions 11 000 to 15 000 15 foot tall gates along Central Park walkways for two weeks in October 1983 or 1984. Each gate would hold a nylon banner, creating a golden, wind driven promenade. The cost could reach 4 to 5 million dollars financed by Christo with plans to sell 500 sketches and employ 1 200 minority youths to erect the installation, drawing mixed local support and fierce criticism from park advocates and community groups.
